"Many consumers are now feeling irritated by automatic tip requests at coffee shops and other counter service eateries where tipping has not typically been expected, workers make at least the minimum wage and service is usually limited." apnews.com/article/tipping-fat

@estherschindler local coffee shop used to use square card payments tip flow towards business expenses and then cash tips went to the employees.
At least according to the signs.
Always thought it was a little weird, but the coffee was good so 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

@estherschindler

Based in my low income, i can only afford to pay 15% for tip. I have therefore stopped going out to eat. As I cannot afford to eat out i won't.

@estherschindler I saw this a couple of days ago in a cake shop. Not a restaurant or cafe, a shop where you go in and tell the people behind the counter "I'd like one of these, an apple turnover, two cream horns, an eclair", etc then they package your cakes and pass them to the person on the checkout. Got to the till (checkout) and the screen showed "Tip amount: 20%, 15%, Other, No Tip" 😲 🤔

@estherschindler workers make at least the minimum wage? the federal minimum wage? that's nowhere close to being a livable wage. i can see why they need tips

@estherschindler I’ve always made it a habit of tipping for service, not the cost of a meal… In places that I’d ordinarily leave a tip, during the pandemic, I’d leave as much as 25% as a token of thanks to those in drive throughs, or markets. However, when I go out to eat now, I’ll leave the same amount regardless of the cost of the meal, if the service was exceptional, the tip would reflect it. Would you tip the cashier at every place you shop, when no service was rendered? I don’t think so…
