yeah, the new version goes in quite a different direction
The new version ends the way the book ends (although the line about being "born for it" appears in BOTH movies, but not in the book!)

I was pretty dismayed to discover that at the end of the 1947 version of "Nightmare Alley", Carlisle — now an alcoholic who's just gotten a job as a geek at a carnival — is rescued by his long-suffering wife, Molly.
