@estherschindler this is still very common event.

When my parents were newly wed, they lived in a small cottage near a lead mine, people would leave some news on the envelope to entertain the village postman.

Mum and dad lived in that village for 6 years and still know about 20 percent of the occupants, its been over 30 years since they moved away.
