Scotland, unlike England, does not have a National Curriculum that lays down exactly what pupils should study in each subject at every stage. Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence directs schools and teachers to focus on developing capabilities.

It is based on the notion that being able to work with others and to appraise information critically is more important than acquiring specific facts.
