This is an important point, so I'd like to address it in detail. What does it mean that the UN switched from reporting >14,500 children and >9,500 women killed in Gaza, to reporting only 7,797 "identified" children and 4,959 "identified" women?

US policy toward Israel is based on numbers the State Department thinks are credible because international organizations deem them credible. Yet the UN is now backing away from the numbers.
"unidentified" is just a new framing that MoH adapted about a month ago for what they previously referred to as "reliable media sources".
critical point is that the "unidentified" casualties figures and their demographic breakdown are absolutely unreliable, and the recent change in UN reporting reflects the fact that people in OCHA also recognize this.
