"Why should anyone rescue them? It was their choice. They wanted to experience something. They went on the sub with freewill. Their choice"
"it's less about contempt and more frustration with millionaires/billionaires engaging in risky activities"
So then we'll stop rescuing hikers who get lost when hiking in bad weather, rock climbers who fall, ramblers who get lost, sailors in distress... they also choose to do they things their choice
@ecksmc I think it's understandable that people might be angry under an unjust system, when the subject is someone who has egregiously benefited from that very injustice. You needn't agree with that stance philosophically, but it I don't personally find it baffling.
Also, people can contain both compassion and anger. I think the anger may be because compassionate people are angered by injustice rubbed in their faces. People aren't their best when angry, but the anger may be valid.
@ecksmc It's that this situation underlines how unjust the world is. Some highly privileged rich people get world news coverage, expensive and dangerous missions to preserve their lives because their pleasure mission failed - while other people facing death from just poverty have nobody to save them. It makes it hard for me to feel compassionate toward the billionaires on board. One can strive to do good, and be compassionate, and not be a saint.
@ecksmc i don't find it baffling at all. billionaires have often caused the inequity, harms, & upheld a capitalist, unjust system. that peeps might see this as vengeance, comeuppance, just desserts, or feel vindicated seems entirely human.
it's hard to bring empathy & compassion for those who've been harmed by peeps like this.
that doesn't mean those same peeps can't want equity for all.
there is just an understanding that billionaires are treated much much better than the rest of us.
@ecksmc Exactly. We need to rescue EVERYONE. Even billionaires are sentient beings deserving of rescue.
@ecksmc eh, we don't really do much for sex workers since they 'chose their profession'. when they need help, we arrest them rather than helping them.
we don't do much for hitchhikers - hey, they know the risks. particularly if they're indigenous. particularly if they're women. even if they have no transportation options other than to hitchhike.
remember, there is a hierarchy & we do treat some peeps better than others. it's not unusual to point that out.
@ecksmc I don't think it follows that we don't save anyone ever again because we criticize the level of bloated wealth these people had to have, to even get into this pickle in the first place.
Are people reacting emotionally to this whole thing? I think it's safe to say yes. Emotions are part of being human. They happen independently of logic. We should have compassion for the angry, too, should we not? Where does anger not exist, without suffering?
@ecksmc It doesn't look good.

baffling how other people put their compassion out only for a certain class of people & also claim they want equality for ALL a fair and just system where everyone is equal
