I’m back in my second home in Washington. Going to chase down a rare grass site on Wednesday and see if it’s really there. I suspect it isn’t but the record is a botanical mystery for me to solve!

Oh I just realized how this sounds. I should say my home away from home. I’m renting a little room for three nights per week. Not like an actual second home. I don’t think rich botanists are a thing that exists.

@Botanic not even if you like, invent a new plant that produces a good berry? Like, can you patent something like that?

@midnighter oh that’s true. I could go work for Monsanto or something. Or become a research plant pathologist — just saw a job announcement for that and it’s pretty good money. But I’m happy doing what I do, getting out in the woods looking for rare plants, lichens, bryophytes, occasionally fungi. It’s rewarding.

@Botanic Yeah, I could see that. I do what I enjoy and make enough to live without struggle. I've had offers that would make me more money, but I know I wouldn't enjoy the work. It's a good balance for me. So I see what you mean.

@midnighter @Botanic That’s what I keep telling my nephews, do what makes you happy and because you’ll be happy, you’ll work hard to do it right and then the monetary side will evolve.
