In 2008, I worked for a small company and the elderly mother of the boss used to slap the employees around. She knew they couldn’t complain because jobs at that time were very few and far in between. It was a minimum wage gig that paid $8/hr.

When I left that job, I reported the company to CalOSHA for workplace violations. They closed down a few years later.
