i got FB notice in Russian, Turkish & a language i'm not familiar with that this is objectionable... it's not

@redenigma Probably because of the word Gypsies, which is considered a slur for the Romani.

@codeWhisperer yes. how do we handle folk songs, stories, etc that were from different times? do we rewrite everything? or do we leave them as a warning of "othering"? how do we deal with those who claim slurs as a badge of honor for themselves? (i know Travelers that claim "'gypsy". next time i see them, i should ask about their reasons)

Agreed. Note that I did not say that "I" consider it a slur, only that it may be on a list of "caution words" that tech companies like FB use. 🙂

And no, I am not one of those who believe that we should rewrite (or ban) ANYTHING based on changing societal views.

I also know some who happily accept and wear the "Gypsy" name, and I've witnessed that the only people who seem to lecture them on using that moniker are people who are NOT Romani.

@codeWhisperer @sumpnlikefaith note that none of the warnings were in English, and it only happened when i posted in the Renn faire group & not when i posted on my own page. very weird factcheck system there
