So I’m late getting a Christmas tree, stress etc etc..and I drive up to a little Xmas tree road stand and ask them to give me a Charlie Brown Xmas tree. The guy immediately leads me to a tiny tree and tells me it’s called “Stumpy”. I said I love him and I’ll take him immediately. Here’s stumpy all fancied up.

I’m so scared. This is my first house. I bought it on my own.

It’s not the first time I’ve been a safe haven for wayward teens and I don’t imagine it’ll be the last.

The boyfriends feelings were hurt when I informed him that I hired the two teen boys next door to help me with yard work. He thought it was a negative comment on his help for me. It’s absolutely not. I hired the boys because I can hear the verbal abuse screamed at them on a daily basis from their father and I want to set up a potential safe space for them. Hiring them for yard work gives me cover to establish that. BF couldn’t believe I was that sneaky.

Today was an interesting day, today was the day my new partner learned how sneaky and manipulative I tend to be for the greater good as a counselor and research scientist. He was taken aback

Oh and another potential echo to look for. In the 1920s after the stress of war and the flu pandemic people shed alot of behavioral norms. Women cut their hair, shortened their skirts. People were alot more free about raucous behavior. I wonder which norms we’re going to throw away. Office culture is definitely on the way out.

Does anyone else feel like we’re living a weird echo of the 1920’s? We have war and pandemic, the stock markets doing well but that only counts for people who have money to invest, massive class inequality, racial tensions and white nationalist backlash. I mean I wasn’t even alive then but I’m getting a weird sense of deja vu.

@corlin he was very good at what he did. His sailors loved him. And the navy had a habit of giving him their crappiest ships and he’d have them in perfect condition inside a year. He’s too blunt for his own good tho. During his retirement ceremony on the USS constitution he spent over 30 minutes criticizing all the things the navy needs to improve in front of several admirals. The last 10 min was praising my mom and giving her diamond earrings. 😍

@corlin Back in the nineties the military had a one strike and you’re out policy if you came up positive for anything during the random drug screenings. Dad hated that. He couldn’t change the policy but he fought like hell every single time to make sure the sailor was honorably discharged rather a dishonorable discharge which was the norm. He didn’t want that black mark following them around forever. Oh and he introduced counseling sessions to help sailors communicate with their wives! 😂😂

@corlin Dad was also loudly critical of the military don’t ask don’t tell policy. In his words, “I think it’s gross but what those guys do in private time is none of my business. I only care about them being a good sailor in my time.” The only I ever saw him intervene in a sailors private life was a domestic abuse situation. The wife (victim stayed at our house for months after Dad went to get her.

How’s everyone doing with Covid? I’m fully vaccinated but still feel uncomfortable being unmasked in public.

So I’m following @corlin lead and telling a few Dad stories for Fathers Day. An engineer by training but an officer and Ship captain. When I was a teenager I told him it was unfair that women weren’t allowed on ships. He agreed and actively sought to change the policy and was one of the first ships to allow girls like me on tiger cruises and women sailors. He knew it was important to me and went all the way up the chain of command to change the policy.

You know regarding all this heartbreaking family stuff. I talked to my Mom and she told me not to worry, she’ll be home this Wednesday and she’ll step in and take care of it. And she definitely will, she’s far more ruthless than me. And she’s always got my back so I just have to breathe and wait until Wednesday. thanks everyone for letting me vent.

Hi everybody. It’s been a while. I need to vent. Take it from me, never ever ever let family members rent property from you. It ends in tears.

Today was too much. Too much stress and I can’t sleep. 3 thing in chronological order and rated from least stress to worst. Placate both parties in a huge argument in my tennis group this morning. Finally said no to a cousin that has been taking advantage of me for months and now they’re accusing me of being the baddie. Had to have a blunt conversation about end of life care and what to expect for an uncle with terminal cancer cause no one else had the fucking balls. My tank is empty.

I told her she has to leave it me in her will and if anyone else tries to claim it I will physically fight them

This is the wood block she stole from me. And I gotta admit it goes really well in her house. She designed her whole living around it. But see how it’s black and white and gray and crisp and the wood blocks she’s offering are more muted and warm colors. It’s a whole different vibe.I’m thinking living room with neutral colors
