One of the bad things about reading research news all day is you find news like this, and then you look slowly all around you, and mutter to yourself "Oh my sweet jesus"
"The researchers found frequent internet use to be a risk factor for poorer mental health among men under the age of 59 (the study’s median age), who scored 6 percentage points higher than the average score in the mental health screening."

@researchbuzz I discussed this with my therapist. She said, "I think it's the amount of time you spend online, isn't it?" *waits for my nod* "It also depends on what you're doing online. If you're doing something that actively challenges your brain like the puzzles on the AARP site you told me about, or socializing with your family on Zoom, that's good. If you're spending all day glued to your screen streaming movies or reading angry social media, that's probably not good.

@caaddison88 You are having to *make an effort* to cultivate a mentally-healthy experience. It would take *no effort at all* to curate a toxic, emotionally-damaging experience.

@caaddison88 It's absolutely what you make of it. Unfortunately, what makes it profitable to social media is going to be toxic to you (or me or anybody else) in my opinion.
