Hey my Cosobuilders- are there any major downsides (other than aesthetics) of not installing fascia before gutters?
@Beanc Er I wouldn't. Fascia and any soffit then gutters. How would you get the fascia up there working behind the gutters?
Let me rephrase this....I worded it poorly.
What are the issues with not installing fascia at all, since i plan on installing gutters.
@Beanc @TrueBloodNet Not an expert in this and can't see the condition of your roof. Don't see a big disadvantage as long as the roof covering (shingle? metal?) overlaps the gutter and you keep the gutters tidy (not like mine!) so water doesn't pool. Suggest that while they're up there they check the roof edge condition and add flashing if it's not present. That might be n/a depending on the roof. All this depends on climate too - snow/ice?

Brand new roof and whatever the underlay to the roof is called). Asphalt shingle. Putting covers on the gutters. Seamless gutters- so hopefully addressing pooling.

Eaves are in very mixed condition (mostly form, one bad areas)
@Beanc @b4cks4w IMO the soffits and fascia can be more easily/cheaply replaced than the structural wood. Shrugs.
I'd never get covered gutters (they still splash up and can still get clogged depending on your environment) I had one section covered and it caused me a world of grief so I ripped the covers off and just get on a ladder 1-2 times a year and check the gutters.

@Beanc @TrueBloodNet So now I'd want to see those rafter ends -- dry rot? Otherwise looks like you could go either way. Another thing to consider if there's a lot of precipitation is to tie the gutter downspouts into a pipe on or underground and get all that water away from the house. One way or another make sure the downspouts aren't dumping out right at the foundation wall.
I really wish contractors would be like “hey you said this but fyi- here’s some things you might want to think of”
I get why they’re like “I’m doin go which is what you hired me fore”. It not helpful to dumb first time homeowner me 😢

I mean, I directly hired roofers for the roof and plumbers for the sewer, but I guess that’s just what made sense in my brain..

@Beanc @b4cks4w The guy before you bought? They can be good or so so. On this house, the guy was about 4 stars. He missed some stuff but it was generally right on. I did not get a detailed report though more like a general inspection. He did not, for instance, mention that the roof needed replaced. :(

We discussed the gutters, but he was basically like - meh get some rain chains. Didnt mention fascia
very disappointed in my sewer inspection (separate specialty inspection), though I *guess* since 5 plumbers were split on how bad it was / what to do, they have a leg to stand on. Barely. I would have thought they'd err on the side of caution (espec. given repair cost).
@Beanc @TrueBloodNet If the rafter ends are still good enough to hang gutters (an older house right?) then I'd do it fwiw. Also might bondo or otherwise seal them up first. It's not too terribly difficult to re-sect and splice onto them if preferred. #options
@b4cks4w @TrueBloodNet yeah most of them are ok. There are about 8 that have dry rot under where I tore down a patio structure.
So you’re telling me I should have had the roofers replace them? 😅
Defo doing downspouts and piping fither into the lawn- my entire goal 😁
