There are some people who cannot see in the United States of America, throughout its history, anything other than evil, monstrous greed and violence.

But though I agree America has had faults, many utterly egregious, and still has many of them, I'm not with those people.

There are those who think America can do no wrong, that it's a shining city on a hill, a beacon for the nations, utterly unique in its virtue.

But though I think America has very real virtues, I'm not with them either.

It may take a special kind of vision to see the greatness in America despite her faults, but that greatness is there. And yet it's not where many people would put it.

America's greatness isn't to be found in her conquests or her colonies. It's not in her victories in battle. It's not in her riches or her capitalism. It's not in the global impact of her culture.

And it's certainly not in being a beacon of Christianity or being a haven for the "White Race."

@DavidSalo I think Gorman did a good job in the Hill We Climb.
"And yes we are far from polished
far from pristine
but that doesn’t mean we are
striving to form a union that is perfect
We are striving to forge a union with purpose"
