We used to pay people to meticulously carve intricate minature works of art, use them to make molds to cast ornate (guessing) bronze plates and door knobs. It wasn't necessary, just preferred.
Interesting to me that we could have robots do it today and chose not to. Everything simple, streamlined, same. The Homogeneous Era.
