@LlamaMountainStudioArts got wood glue? I like to screw and glue. Predrilled screw holes should prevent splitting and with glue you may not need the brackets. The thing is heavy right?

Yeah, hemlock is finicky, but pre-drilling those holes will help.
Bracket fasteners look spaced-out enough to be okay to hold that weight.
How will that be affixed to the wall after, Ll?
