Can't change Gnome* but I did find a repair guide for the mouse on ifixit because they are the best.

can't really recommend looking inside keyboards and mice via microscope

Scrollwheel click works but not at 100%. Plastic flakes in the button? Button worn out? Space monkeys?
I'm in the market for another mouse.

Feel better about the patient's chances. The scrollwheel contains the seeds of its own demise. The axle material has flaked off a bit into the button, presumably obstructing the electrical connection inside. Compressed air may help. Can somewhat see it here. White on left is plastic axle, resting on blue button. Magnification is ~20x
