On this day, seventy-one years ago, the naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan attacked United States military facilities at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, headquarters of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

This was the opening strike of a wide-ranging offensive by Japan, which also struck at Guam, Hong Kong, Malaya, the Philippines, and Singapore, with the intent of uniting most of the Pacific and Far East in an empire under Japanese control.
