Can't remember the exact publication date nor specific edition number, but there was an alien named ZZZax which fed off fear. The JLA killed it by creating a nightmare in Superman's unconscious, which was so powerful it overwhelmed ZZZax and killed it. It came out between 1974 and 1977, I believe. I owned it back in the day!
@TheEyeOfBalor wait...Zzzax is Marvel's. A quick search for aliens feeding on fear for DC gave me Nekron. That was in 76, which I was reading at that time, but the characters doesn't look familiar at all.

Yes, that's the one! He fought the JLA and was thrown down, literally, into the Eiffel Tower, if memory serves.

There was also a Justice League comic book back in the mid-'70s with the same premise.
That said, it's certainly applicable today.
