Hey CoSo,

any suggestions for a vertical computer mouse?

For 5 months, been working crazy long hours, no wonder my wrist is not happy now.

Thank you 😃

@artemis ergonomist here. Have you tried a tenkeyless keyboard? Wrist pains/injuries related to computer use mostly have to do with the fact that the numeric keypad on a standard keyboard pushes the mouse to far right. Wired mouse doesn’t help too.

@artemis
I’m gonna be the oddball and recommend a Logitech MX Ergo Pro track ball. I’ve been using it at work and home for two years now. Love it.

@artemis
I now pair this with a new M$ ergonomic keyboard LXM-00001
Wonderful split keyboard.
Been using a split board since the late 90s. Saved my wrists. And palms

@InvaderGzim @artemis that’s the key part : no experience of enduring pains after the change of setup. If it works, don’t change it!

@artemis keyboard too large, desk height at 29 1/2 inches, cluttered space around keyboard/mouse or insufficient space on keyboard tray are the usual suspects

@magicsoda

Thank you very much.
Ergonomist ! Perfect !!

Been using wireless mouse for years. It'sonly now, bcz of crazy time over-use, that wrist hurts. It's mostly bcz of contact with desk ! on the external side of the wrist.

@artemis for that I used oversized mousepads or Magic playmats wether with one is easier to find. Go with a mousepad as wide as your shoulders and at least 12 inches deep. The objective is to create a wide thinly cushion space to put your mouse and keyboard that will let you love your things around.

@artemis if you can’t modify your desk setup than a vertical mouse will help. Whatever the model you choose (there is no clear winner and all gives somewhat good results), go wireless.

@artemis also quality with tenkeyless keyboard varies A LOT! Some are less than trash. Be careful around the low costs one.

@magicsoda

Good ideas, all.
Well, since am working at home now, been using the laptop for all work and fun. May need to consider ergonomic keyboard.

@artemis split keyboard is often too wide, just as a standard one. You need plenty and then more space for your right arm.

@magicsoda

ok.
I looked at vertical mice.. they look big.. funny they have one size fits all. No?

@artemis yeah. The issue with vertical mouse is the placement of the button in contrat with the shape/length of the mouse. You sometimes need to claw the mouse in your hand to maintain speed and precision. Over the last 15 years of ergo assessments, I guesstimate that less than 40% of vert. mouse user like them/eases their pains.

@artemis the Logitech M-Series gives more positives results overall. The wireless M-510 is just ok and works very well for a lot of people.

@magicsoda

aha, my current one is wireless logitech m-325... . for the simple reason that it's painted with pretty butterflies :--)

So, what's the optimum fit for a mouse ? how is it supposed to fit the hand? and where the hand is supposed to have contact with desk, off mouse?

@artemis the m 325 is what I consider a travel mouse. It is a tad bit too small for a comfortable hand posture. Hence the m-510. For the fit, it’s complicated, because there are soooo many variations in shapes and buttons placement for even same sized mice. The big picture is more about where, at what height and what work activities you do with the mouse (more keyboard than mouse to 100% mouse & scrolling/precision clicking/moving texts around/random uses/etc.

@artemis also, some user interfaces are just horrible and cause more wrist strain because of bad menu hierarchy or buttons placements and sizes.

@magicsoda

Yes, I suspect that one reason is my mouse being too small. My hands are small/medium, maybe medium bcz of long fingers.

Also, good tip with mousepads. I have zero fat padding around my wrist, so a good mousepad should be no brainer. I just switched from office work to homework without thinking ergo.

@artemis while WFH, there an opportunity absent from regular office setting. Depending on the task on your workload, you should always verify if you really are needed to be sitting at your computer. A zoom call you don’t have to talk? Get out and walk around with your headphone. Need to make your mind in some hard to cut decision : get outside to think about it, etc. The objective is to lower the amount of time sitting at you proper desk without sacrificing productivity.

@magicsoda

That's all good advice.
I do not sit for Zoom. I logged even 7h of standing on Zooms.
But, I have been over-using the hand, lots of projects, writing stuff. Need to get more careful.

I appreciate you being so generous sharing your expertise. Thank you 😍

@artemis 😂 I always have been a bad businessman. More so, my regular clients have to remind me that I missed some hours on my invoices and they ask to modify it with 3-4 hours more that I didn’t count because I didn’t feel like charging it. Been like that for almost 20 years now. That’s the problem with a job you like and you grow into it. Take care and feel free to ask if in doubt again.

@artemis I have one from monoprice that's pretty good. Only complaint is the battery runs out noticeably more often than mice that use normal batteries. This one uses a rechargable internal battery. I just plug it in for an hour while I'm using it and it's good to go.

monoprice.com/product

@artemis didn't notice the item got sanitized (heads up @th3j35t3r - think some text after the link might have been eaten also) but if you search vertical mouse there you'll see it.

It's $15 and a good test of whether it helps you and if you should invest in a more expensive one. :)
