The crew rely on constant runs by US commercial cargo ships and Russian Progress ships for food, clothing, supplies, water, and the experiments they run. Typically the crew has about a three-month supply of food. If lost, this will reduce their reserves.

And let's not overlook the experiments. Some researchers invested millions just to get to this point.
