Monkeypox (MPox) has slowly crept up in the news as more cases are found outside the endemic zone. The current subtype (Clade 1) is 10x more deadly than Clade 2. Please, make sure to keep yourself informed of the current situation. This reminds me a lot of HIV when it first started out in Africa but it was initially ignored because it only affected homosexual men. #zoonotic, #health #disease https://www.wired.com/story/mpox-outbreak-global-public-health-emergency/
@Victor Or in the United States where they ignored it because it happened to homosexual men.
Let's not dump all that shit just on Africa, when supposedly modern and civilized nations like the US did the exact same bullshit.
@AskTheDevil Africa was well aware of HIV as well as MonkeyPox. WHO and US CDC were aware but it did not deem them as something that would have any effect outside of Africa until it did. Practical disease control is to do it at the source so it does not get out of control. So yes, US was and continues to deem these diseases as unimportant. Climate change is bringing some of these diseases to US doorstep sooner than expected so Africa and other areas need assistance to stop them.
@AskTheDevil Nigeria has been dealing with MonkeyPox for about 50 years and one of their recommendations is for masking You'll be hearing recommendations from internet experts that say otherwise. Again, better to be proactive now. Mind you, smallpox can be spread through direct contact and airborne droplets.
@Victor It's a little like watching smallpox come back bigger and uglier, and the world doing nothing because right _now_ it's only bothering people they don't care about.
Like anyone deserves not to be cared about.
Well, when we don't care about people getting horrible diseases, they spread.
