@peeppeepcircus States need to start having industries pay a deposit into a fund for doing business and continue to pay into said fund for pollution mitigation and accidents caused by them. Mind you, this is not a tax but more equivalent to a monthly insurance payment.
@peeppeepcircus Yeah, Peep. I've heard rumblings, too, but not specifics. As you no doubt know, the petrochem industry is yuge in CA.
@Ironworker229 the oil industry probably wants the cap, probably is lobbying for it. surprising how powerful they are in our state.
@peeppeepcircus I'd be amazed if they weren't! I don't think that it's broadly appreciated in state, much less around the country, how big Big Oil is present in CA.
@Ironworker229 It’s like a death grip we can’t shake loose.
@peeppeepcircus It is, and the industry is intertwined with so many not-so-obvious others like plastics and fertilizers...many more. It's very difficult to get my head around just how big the whole enterprise really is.
@Ironworker229 I was trying to imagine the medical industry without plastics and I just couldn’t (unfortunately). All of this stuff is baked in.
@peeppeepcircus @Ironworker229
Those costs will fall into consumers. Not arguing against it, but, yes, we're all dependent on petrochemicals. Basically everything little and big thing we buy is impacted. Need to paint your house? Petrochemicals. Need a surgical procedure? Petrochemicals. Need a medication to live? Petrochemicals.
@Victor I heard California was looking into doing this, HOWEVER it would include a cap of damages. Which makes no sense, as the damage from these industries is exponential and seemingly endless, at least in our lifetimes.
