Good morning #CoSo - from not so sunny Wales!!!
What’s everyone doing today?
@VaKnow22 oooh wales is lovely. the sun is overrated, tbh. 😜
it's just after 1 am here. another insomniac kinda night. sigh.
what are you up to?
@singlemaltgirl
Haha, if the Sun is overrated, Wales might just be the greatest place on earth!! 😜
Ahhh no! I’ve been there. Insomnia sucks. Happy to chat for a while to pass the time.
I am just getting up (8.30am here) and going to start the day with a run. Then take my boy to football ⚽️!
Any plans for tomorrow?
(Ps, I’m Rhys)
@VaKnow22 i'm packing. planning a move back to the coast so that is my weekend.
i love wales. i also love the rain. i'm already brown - don't need to work on my tan 😜
how old is your boy?
@singlemaltgirl
Ahhh in that case, move to wales, we’ve got pretty coastlines. And I promise you’ll never see the Sun! 😂 and it’s always raining!
Which coast are you moving to? Sounds exciting!
My boy is 8 (also have a 10 yr old daughter - who I take to football tomorrow!)
@VaKnow22 i do love wales. it's very pretty. & i have seen the sun there. i love the beaches. & the tramping about.
i'm in 🇨🇦. moving back to the west coast. i've been in alberta (ie the conservative hell hole of 🇨🇦) for several years. time to go home.
oh, both kids in football then! nice. what's the rest of your weekend like?
@singlemaltgirl
Ah west coast Canada looks incredible. Don’t know much about Alberta except for the Battle of Alberta (oilers v flames?) and huge oil fields? (Correct me if I’m making all that up!)
Yeah both kids love football, I can’t stand it 🤣
And I’m my daughters coach!! 🤦♂️(No one else wanted to do it!- it’s a rugby town!)
you do know alberta. why!??!?! but yes, you got that right. the only province w/ 2 hockey teams. wait. not true. ontario has 2 as well but we don't talk about them. lol.
yes, & the home of oil & gas. don't get me started.
that's hilarious that you dont like football but you're the coach. good dad! i use to coach my son but that was v-ball.
do you play rugby then - if you're in a rugby town?
@singlemaltgirl
I’m a big hockey fan (NYrangers, sorry!) but almost no-one watches it in Wales, although we do have a team - Cardiff Devils. So that’s how I knew a little about Alberta!
I haven’t played rugby since Covid interrupted everything. And at 35 feel I should probably stop anyway! Plus I wasn’t particularly good! 😂
Who’s your hockey team then?
@VaKnow22 oh wow! i don't know many uk hockey fans. that's impressive. we'll give you a pass on liking an american hockey team (wtf is that about?!??!) 😂
does the uk have a hockey league? or do the devils play in an eu league?
35 is young. after 40 is when the healing seems to take a fucking long time 😜
what positions do your kids play? the 10 yr old must have a position. the 8 yr old...they may not be there yet, right?
@singlemaltgirl
There is a British league. Cardiff Devils over the last 5 years tend to win it. We are essentially about 3 British players surrounded by a tonne of Canadians!
We play in European competitions but that’s a much higher standard. We played the Swedish champions and they absolutely buried us!!
Ok so I picked NYR because I figured it was geographically about the closest to me. Plus my ex at the time agreed that we’d go to NY, and I could watch a game. In the end we never went! 🤦♂️
@singlemaltgirl
Yeah you might be right. I mean she picked Calgary Flames?!?! 😬
Yeah it snows here every 5 years or so! The Swedes, Finns, Austrians are all amazing!
You’re absolutely right, midfield is no glory! Except my daughter is lazy so doesn’t even do the running around!!!
“Positions smositions”… I feel like you’ve listened to my half time team talk! 😂
@singlemaltgirl
Ha ha, the warning signs were there!!
Yeah, she’s a smart cookie! Just waits for the ball!
So what’s you team? Canucks?
@VaKnow22 don't laugh. but i was a habs fan for years. and the oilers before i moved here. but they kept trading all my players. & i got pissed off. i'm about loyalty. & if you don't show the players who got you to where you are any loyalty, i can't be bothered.
my man plays rec hockey. but he complains he's getting old. ha ha. i can watch hockey wherever i just have better things to do w/ my time. & i'd rather play sports than watch it, ya know?
@singlemaltgirl
Ha ha! Habs! Better off supporting anyone else (except the flames!!)
Yeah I agree, except I have no desire to play hockey. Rugby is tough enough, let alone arming your opponents with sticks!!
@VaKnow22 nope. in 🇨🇦 the most reviled of hockey teams is the toronto maple leafs. their fans are mocked endlessly. they are a joke in every sense of the word. even if they were to win, they're still losers. 😂
oh, i don't play hockey. i can't skate to save my life. but i like to play tennis or go hiking or kayaking (things i haven't been able to do here really) i used to play field hockey & lots of vball which i did until the pandemic hit.
Hey, 👋 I live 60 miles from the big old T. You could have had a big old fight on your hands....if you were wrong. 😂 We know we're hated. We wear it as a badge of pride and honour. 😉 The mockery is built in, I guess. 🤷♀️
@VaKnow22
but you know, the senators aren't reviled or hated in the same way. & while we all love to dog pile quebec, there's plenty of hab fans.
i really do think it's a toronto thing. i have no idea why. well, i can guess...🤔
They haven't won the Stanley Cup in more than 50 years. that's #1. We've decided that the owners hold on to the team for a tax write off. That's the only sensible explanation for the studity with which that team is run.
Used to go to Habs games when I lived in Montreal. The hatred between the Leafs & Habs is real.
@VaKnow22
@Krysdammit well the canucks have never won a cup. they're not hated like them. so i dunno. but i have heard the disdain w/ which torontonians view the leafs' ownership. it is kind of sad.
& why the fuck do owners get tax writeoffs for owning nhl teams?!?!?!? riddle me that one, batman. sigh.
@singlemaltgirl
I have no idea as to the tax write off, but that is what we've decided amongst ourselves is the best explanation. I could probably run that team better and I don't like hockey and don't understand much about it. 😂
,@VaKnow22
@singlemaltgirl
Toronto itself is hated from coast to coast to coast. They got laughed at when a blizzard blanketed the city a few years ago and they called the Army in to help. My sis sent me pictures of her house, taken from the inside because the 2nd storey windows were completely covered in snow. And they got mocked.
@VaKnow22
well, i'd never mock a natural disaster, diff cities are built for diff types of weather. 5 inches of snow in van would cripple the city & be a snow day. in edm, we get 2 feet & it's biz as normal. but if it rained here like it does in van? we would be fucked. it's why climate change is causing such chaos. we built our infrastructure based on known weather patterns....
but i digress.
we do all hate to. b/c they think they're the centre of the universe & mindset. 😜
@singlemaltgirl
There is nothing funny about Van getting snow.
I'm not a Torontonian myself, so have no idea what they think. I live 60 miles down the road from them. 😉 @VaKnow22
Wow that was great to read! The inter-Canadian rivalries are superb!!
Talking of rivalries, you wanna watch some of the British football rivalries. Cardiff-millwall, Cardiff-Swansea, Cardiff- Bristol, Cardiff- everyone
Cardiff (my home in Wales) had a foot of snow about 4 years ago. It was like the Armageddon. We have no infrastructure for snow.
@VaKnow22 oh, ofc your football rivalries in the uk are legend. the football clubs & who follows who & families are generational fans. not unlike us w/ hockey.
sports fans are crazy everywhere 😜
exactly! but you can handle all that rain, right? i remember when i first moved to edm. it rained for a couple of days. like torrential. it was glorious. reminded me of home (van). but the roads flooded & had to be closed, people were hydro planing everywhere. it was a disaster.
@singlemaltgirl
Kit-Wat area has hit badly by rains and flooding over the last decade. For 3 years they were ripping out the roads in my area and installinf new drain pipes.
Those things were HUGE I could easily stand inside of one and raise my hands over my head. Ok, I'm short, 5'2", but still I could stand on my tippy toes and raise my hands and not touch the top of it.
@Krysdammit aren't those big farming communities? i imagine all the developed & infrastructure took away natural flood mitigation possibly?
@singlemaltgirl
It's because of all of the roads, asphalt & parking lots everywhere. There's nothing there to absorb rain when it falls. Tiny plots of grass between driveways can only take so much water. Of course they tore down old houses which stood on large lots and built aparment blocks surrounded by parking. Duh. It floods. Kitchenr is also quite flat. Waterloo has more hills, so the roads get their own rain plus everything runs down. Talk about hydroplaning at intersection!
@VaKnow22
@Krysdammit i figured as much. we saw that in calgary. d/town built on a flood plan (stupid) but then all the building over natural storm water absorption really caused devastation. i know we need housing. but we do need to think about flood infrastructure. there's going to be more & more unpredictable weather.
we need more trees & natural water mitigation big time. in every city.
@singlemaltgirl
Waterloo, the older part where I live has huge trees. Windstorms got 'em 6 yrs ago or so. Driving down the 401 you can still see the damage along the hiway. Streets in my area are covered in Linden trees. First the winds got the trees then when they did the road they had to cut them back for the equipment, trucks etc. One street over it switches to Crabapples.
Here's the map I gorgot to add!
@VaKnow22
@Krysdammit how sad. we lost a lot of trees in calgary w/ a freak snow storm in sept a few years back. it came so suddenly, the leaves hadn't even changed colour. so many trees had to be cut down b/c the branches weighted w/ snow just broke. dangerous & tragic. hasn't recovered yet. but they know trees suck up more water than most any other vegetation (other than the soil itself) so they need those trees. & young trees drink a lot :)
How horrible. Snow does so much damage to trees. Some yrs in Niagara region it snows when fruit trees are in bloom. That's always bad, they lose the harvest & some trees too.
I distinctly remember that we had a heavy frost on June 7, '63. My parents had rented a house with a huge garden patch & raspberry patch. Figured they could grow enough vegs for most of the year. & make raspberry syrup to boot. Lost eveything, potatoes, tomats they'd started from seed.
@VaKnow22
@VaKnow22
My bil is British and a Manchester United fan. I've heard a little about those. 😂
Where I live a foot of snow is a dusting! It all depends on how the city is built and which weather conditions.
When I moved to Montreal the first thing my neighbour told me was that in the winter when I shovelled my driveway to make sure that the speed limit sign at the edge of my property was always visible in winter. I laughed. I was crying in Jan... the sign was 8' off the ground.@singlemaltgirl
exactly! edmonton? can handle tons of snow. cars parked on the street can get buried overnight & need to be shoveled out. but they can't handle 2 days of rain that van would get for weeks on end.
we live in a funny country. 😜 😋 🤔
@singlemaltgirl
It's a vast country landmass wise. Weather is so varied across it.
My ex was relocated by his work many times so I've lived in different cities. London gets way more snow that Kit-Wat or T. because they get lake effect snow off of Lake Huron BUT their spring comes 2 weeks earlier & lasts 2 weeks longer.
By moving from London to Montreal I lost a full month of growing season for my veg garden. Toronto also gets Lake effect snow but from a diff direction & Lake Ont. @VaKnow22
@Krysdammit yup. alberta & bc are the same. you have chinooks in calgary, arctic fronts in edmonton, and the coast is way diff from the mainland. the okanagan gets the lake effect. snow up north like crazy. & don't get me started on nor'easters in the maritimes. the pacific is much kinder to coastal peeps than the atlantic is. & the st lawrence seaway is frigid as fuck. i thought i would die one feb in montreal. 😩 😰
@singlemaltgirl
When I moved to Mon. my kids were 6 and 5. I walked them to and from school, 4 trips for me each day. In the winter I set them on a tobaggan & pulled them to and fro.
I bought a snowsuit & wore a mink coat over it! I still ficken froze. I actually lived on Ille Perrot, (20 mins by car to downtown Montreal St Catherine St.) surrounded by water. Talk about snow and wind and frigid cold!
Here's a map, Ille Perrot is bottom left. I lived in Pincourt, bot left. 😂
@VaKnow22 well, she told you she wasn't a keeper, right there. who the fuck chooses the flames when they don't live in calgary??!?! 😂 😜
well, if i were your daughter, i'd likely do the same. it's a good vantage point to watch the game from...lol.
ha!
