Awww. Poor little guy.
When I was a kid I had a bunk bed too, and was jerked awake by my ankle catching on the rail as I fell.
I was hanging upside down, screaming, when my parents came into the room.
The rail was attached to the top of the ladder so there was a gap at the top and bottom of the bed and I somehow wriggled through in my sleep.
They're fun, and even with better rails now, they could use some better safety measures.

@CannibalHoliday One time, I wriggled through in my sleep and was hanging by my neck. Luckily my dad happened to check on me and saved me!
