Hey coso fam! I got a ? for y'all any any tips would be helpful. you all know by now I do photography. Sadly its been landscapes & street for a while now. hopefully that'll be changing over summer. That said, I'm on other outlets to get my name out there as I'm capable of more than I show not to mention I want to make $$ . It's a hobby first /$$ second & when I've made $$ it's been good $$. But what can I do to increase engagement? I do stories/reels & get views but never get likes/comments.
@MidnightRider yea I know. I've been doing this 37 years (I started when I was 7 but didn't take it seriously until I was about 15/16) and people don't want to pay for experience. But I'm not looking for a full blown career (I'm realistic) but I'd like to make some bank so I can keep buying new toys (aka lenses/flashes) for it. There was that one site that used to favor photography. Now it's more about reels/stories and it's like does anyone actually care about the art form
@MidnightRider tomorrow I'm doing a food truck event (for me not for any truck). Hoping turn our will be good. Maybe if I get some of these local businesses (free advertising) maybe I can get some customers to give me a follow. At least nobody can say I'm not trying!
@Timmah1979 I have a college friend who makes quite a bit of cash on the side as a wedding and graduation photographer. Nothing professional (most of the photoshoots she does are for other college students). Maybe not your thing but it's worth looking into.
@chevalier26 I did weddings for a brief spin (2010-2015) but I didn't enjoy it & got out of it. I made a promise to myself, it started out as a hobby I was passionate about. Making $ was a bonus. But the minute I didn't enjoy what I was doing I'd back out because I wanted to keep the reasons I started "pure". As far as graduations go, I've attempted the HS Sr photo route. The biggest barrier that got is basically there's 1 person who has it on lockdown in this area. everyone else gets scraps
@Timmah1979 Man, that's tough. I know you mentioned landscapes and street photography, have you considered real estate? I know that's a big market right now, and you could probably partner with local/travel magazines as well. Just a thought.
@chevalier26 I've thought about that actually. But I have no experience in that realm. Most of my exp has come from personalized shoots (portrait), landscapes I shoot out of boredom, not a huge fan but it keeps me creative. Like the waterfalls i did today. Nothing spectacular but got to try some new techniques.. street you gotta hope and pray . I like to stay in one spot and set up the camera and if something interest happens in front of it then becomes a win.
@Timmah1979 Ever thought about a telephoto lens for astrophotography? That's something I've wanted to do for a while but there's a huge financial barrier. Probably the main reason keeping most people from getting into it. But it pays incredibly well.
@chevalier26 I'm just patiently waiting on that one lens. I shoot Canon and last November they released a 200-800mm lens and it's compatible with a 2x extender (supposedly) I'll be doing a bit of that when I get that in my hands 😁.
@chevalier26 and if you can't get no support (this is where friends come in handy) your screwed. Most of my "friends" have kids and I'm like lemme do some shots. Well they also know the big name in the area and they pretty much pledged their loyalty to them. It is what it is though . I'm not upset but it is frustrating
@Timmah1979 Take the camera to HS sporting events? I have a friend making bank who started there. It's a tough gig, everyone has a phone on them now.
