@mcfate Well being i spend 2500 on this damn thing id hate to spend more $$ less then 2 years later into this. i went macbook because i thought it was supposed to have less issues than PC lol. I use it for my photowork so you can kind of imagine how distracting it would be when you are in the middle of edits. But ill give the SMC reset a try. cant hurt. Wouldnt be so bad if the computer repair place (only one in this area) wants $75 just to look at it
Well, this is why they give one-year warranties and why some people pay to extend 'em. Not me, it's usually a bad bet.
Any piece of equipment can fail, for any number of reasons, and Macs DO tend to have fewer issues and retain their value better than PCs do.
Here's a tip: I buy all my Apple stuff refurbished from Apple. It's literally as good as new, it comes with the same warranty a new unit does, and you can save a fair bit of money.
FWIW, I've repaired my own equipment, including iPhones, iPods, and iPads. It can be a hairy PitA sometimes, but it's certainly do-able.
iFixit is a totally legit site that can sell you whatever you need and give you some guidance on what to do with it.
That said, Apple doesn't go out of their way to make repairs easy to do. But they can be done. You just have to be careful.
@mcfate I bought mine from Best Buy . Was a good deal so i figured what the hell lol. I usually dont buy warranties because 9x out of 10 im just throwing money away. This was the 1x lol
Yeah, life can be like that. My last MacBook Pro kept having the battery swell up, and on that model, the battery and the keyboard (!) are a unified component.
The first time, they replaced it for free because there was a maintenance advisory out on that model. The second time, they wanted somewhat over $300, at which point I ordered a (refurb) Mac Mini, which doesn't have a freaking battery I never actually need.
If you use a laptop at a desk all the time, you're better off with a desktop machine, I think, and not an "all in one" like an iMac.
If my monitor gets stupid, I'll just buy a new monitor.
@mcfate eventually. But as it stands now, where I currently live , no room for a desktop. The world literally is my desk . Coffee shop, ft job, living room couch, dining room table, in the hotels lol
@mcfate so I got it to the shop. Paid the $75 (grudgingly). Now we wait. figures when I turned it on in front of him the line didn't show up. He's like we can keep it running but we can't have someone here and just watch til it happens and I totally get that. So I was just gonna pack it up take it home and leave it on til it came up again and keep it open and drive there while on next time I came up . soon as I got ready to shut it down it popped up. So at least he knew I'm not crazy lol
@mcfate I asked him any thoughts. He goes it could be display or it's overheating somehow. But won't know til they open it up
The difference between him and me is that I didn't charge you seventy-five bucks.
@mcfate very true. But it's gonna have to be fixed so hopefully that will be waved when the repair is done. That would be a small win
@mcfate just got my laptop back already. $75 to take care of it. They said the wires had to be reseated. It probably got bumped hard enough and jarred the wire to where it wasn't getting a good connection . Wasn't completely out but not completely in either. So I dodged a bullet in the expensive department
@mcfate yep and I prob gotta be more careful too. You'd be surprised on things that I do , (if ya knew me in person though it wouldn't surprise you though). I'm one of those where people are like only you would manage that. Lol
@mcfate and yes once I get my new place I'll be looking into a desktop. This just has to last until then.
@mcfate well the comp ended going back. They ended up changing the screen. 850. They still dont know what the issue is because it was passing the diagnostics each time and that line was so intermittent it wasnt happening to them. needless to say i needed some tissues, But it is what it is. next computer i buy WILL be a desktop. But all i know is i better get as much out of this as i did my previous macbook (9 years)
Well, too late now, but when I realized that I didn't actually need to carry a laptop anywhere, I ran my MacBook "headless" and connected to an external monitor with an HDMI cable.
@mcfate I never thought about that. I will definitely remember that for next time. Its not even the cost that bugs me right now (yes it was tears to my eyes shelling that out) but the fact that the issue wasn't happening to them and passing their tests. Its like I know what i seen! lol.
@mcfate I did a Google search and the 14" model has same issue (I got 16") and apparently it was a design flaw. I'm thinking now it might be same with mine . For them to screw up 2 models like that would be a "wow" moment
@mcfate I'm prob gonna take it down to get looked at. If I have any personal flaws I'm very OCD and that line is gonna drive me bat shit
@Timmah1979
You can try resetting the SMC β a long shot, Hail Mary sort of thing β but that sort of thing usually a sign that the display is failing, sorry.
If money's a serious issue, one line on a display with 1980 (or more) of 'em ain't the end of the world.
The last MacBook Pro I used as a Mac β it runs Parrot Linux atm β ran headless, hooked up to a desktop display.
I've taken a Vow Against Further Travel.
