Ever come across people that you know to share most of your same ideas but then they go really far to the left? Like the polar opposite of the Maga crowd? It's interesting because some of them suffer from the same delusions just on the other side of the spectrum. They also can be all or nothing when it comes to an opinion of something.

Case Study thread

So I shared this image on FB. Not knowing who "Food Babe" is but the things I know about the US Food standards and Starbucks it doesn't surprise me.

I've had 2 people commwnt, "yeah, but it's Food Babe" and link her bio to me.

Sure she seems a bit extreme on some issues or her opinions but what if the Starbucks things is mostly true???

I'm trying to figure out what I'm missing?

@ThrasherPrime

I always say that you can tell the "progressives" by the way they consistently impede any actual progress that won't give them every single thing they want to demand.

@ThrasherPrime

The way I look at things, anyone who pays Starbucks for a pumpkin spice latte gets precisely what they deserve.

@mcfate Couldn't agree more.

I just understand when people do those types of guerilla warfare drops. Like I want to say, ok, explain your work and provide references. Don't just drop a name. 🤷‍♂️

I'm cranky today. Had COVID and flu boosters yesterday and feel blah today.

@ThrasherPrime

If you're walking into Starbucks looking for a healthy, socially conscious beverage, you're deluded.

@ThrasherPrime

This is like complaining that everything the Good Humor truck sells is high in fat and sugar.

@ThrasherPrime being extreme, especially about food, is generally going to gain zealots and lose those with critical thinking.

it could be that those commenters have seen some zany stuff on her page, none of which is backed by citable facts.

@ThrasherPrime did she? I've never been one to pay attention to that, i view food a little differently than most.

@ThrasherPrime My only jab at this thing is wondering why people expect pumpkin in there. "Pumpkin spice" is a spice blend.

"Canadian steak" contains neither Canadians nor steak, but people get the blend idea there and don't complain.

(Yeah it's not as common, but it is funnier)

@sheseala That is hilarious actually. And guess my point is less about the Starbucks take but what about her makes it invalid. Or what about the information is untrue. It's not hard to find the ingredients list, I suppose.

@ThrasherPrime It's been a *long time* since I ran into any of her stuff. My memory is she'd double down when people showed he was wrong about a particular food study.

It's also the fearmongering. Things have risk but it doesn't mean it's poison and I remember her describing nearly everything like it was poison.

I had classes about toxicity and her stuff to me at the time was like a doc watching an episode of House.

@ThrasherPrime The toxic dose of sugar bit is the weirdest "yes, but no" thing for me. I'll try to sum up.

The bad things from sugar are all from normal operation of the body and not destruction of tissue caused by it. So like, it's bad, but not toxic in how I use the term toxic.

There's max dosage which is a definition in the term toxicity, but unless diabetic, it's not going to kill you. If you're having it daily, it might. Eventually.

@sheseala That's good info and I appreciate that.

I drink 3 things regularly. Mushroom coffee with golden milk, water and beer. Not just any beer, either beer I made or a local microbrewery.
