On October 20th, Spirit Day is observed annually, a day dedicated to standing against LGBTQ+ bullying and showing support for LGBTQ+ youth. Participants are encouraged to wear purple as a sign of solidarity. Spirit Day began in 2010, inspired by a social media campaign started by Canadian teenager Brittany McMillan, following a series of tragic suicides among LGBTQ+ youth who had been victims of bullying.
The initiative, backed by GLAAD and other advocacy organizations, has grown over the years, with individuals, schools, companies, and even celebrities participating globally. The day aims to raise awareness of the issues faced by LGBTQ+ youth, such as bullying and mental health challenges, and to foster a sense of community and support. Each year, millions of people don purple to take a stand against bullying and to promote a message of acceptance and love.
