@Tail *has MORE flashbacks from the MM BBS days* 👀
@ChillySnowgirl those were better days
@Tail OMG were you there?! Fess up your username if you were!
@Tail I posted in this colour (lightgreen), and had to type in the code to get it because it wasn't a standard colour offered. Plus, i always f**ked up the word "color" (because i'm Canadian), so there was much editing of posts in the beginning.. 😂
@ChillySnowgirl I remember having a lot of fun with BBS formatting, made me feel like a web developer. Did people give you shit for saying colour?
@Tail Yeah, Myspace was like that in the beginning too, just in how you could customize your writing colour, backgrounds... everything really.
Nobody bugged me about my spelling because there were a couple of Canadians and British people there, and they spelled it the same way. 🙂
@ChillySnowgirl I'm pretty sure I ragged on colour a couple times. I was young and stupid.
@Tail There was only one other "regular" that used green, but his was "limegreen"--i know this because we became friends (and still are). I'm actually still in contact with 5 friends from that era (and the bbs that was spawned right after as a result of changes there). 🙂
@ChillySnowgirl oh wow, that's so cool. I'd kept a few friends from my forum days for quite a while, though we eventually fell off not all that long ago. I think that's the best thing about the internet, and that's why I think those were better days. It was a lot simpler.
@ChillySnowgirl people always liked to rag on those of us who made legitimate friendships with people we met on forums, image boards and online games but they're real friendships and they last.
@ChillySnowgirl oh yeah, back before it was mainstream and it wasn't about superficiality and "influencers" and even just being on the internet in general was looked down on. The greatest achievement you could get was like, being made admin of a board, that was the height of achievements. People weren't sharing pictures of every meal they ate, etc.
@Tail Do you remember "signatures"? Some people had HUGE signatures (or those ones with the animated glitzy writing..sometimes both, haha). You got a real verbal flogging for having those when so many were still on dial up! 😁
One of my still-friends introduced me to some nice gothy music from Sopor Aeternus, but some of those songs took 6 HOURS to download! I wouldn't have the patience for that today!
@ChillySnowgirl lol, yeah I remember those. So gaudy.
I used to think I wouldn't have the patience for it but I'm in the middle of nowhere hotspotting off a phone with no data, I get about dial up speeds on everything. Downloading 1GB can take about 3 - 5 hours. When I download games I have to leave my phone next to my laptop 24/7 for days at a time, like more than a week in some cases. Streaming is off the table entirely. Animated gifs still take me a while to load.
@Tail Oh for sure! I mean it's kinda like this place in that you can spend hours hanging out with people... back then with internet connections being unequal, we couldn't all share our voices or pictures, but you definitely got to know a person in other ways as long as they were being truthful. I actually think it was more honest then than it is now in how it's become more about physical image and less about real conversation.
