@kaehlys very much so. I was learning Norwegian for a good while and it was obvious like, half the words you could look at and make a fairly reasonable guess as to what it would translate into in English. Languages are crazy. As far as I know English is basically half Germanic anyway.
@Tail I believe about 7 in 10 English words have Germanic origins. I'm currently learning German and being able to make a solid guess as to what a word is really helps the process.
@kaehlys German always seemed hard to me but I never really gave it a proper effort. I keep wanting to learn a new language to move out of the US but Duolingo can only take you so far.
@Tail Some of the grammar can get a little funky, and the gender stuff *really* throws a spanner in the works.
I'm using Duolingo, watching Herr Antrim's videos on YouTube (he's an Illinois high school German teacher), and using Olly Richards's Story Learning.
I also watch the Deutsche Welle TV station to train my ear to lots of different voices and accents.
@Tail I'm exposed to a several other languages at work and the English from whence the translations originated. Seeing all the commonalities and similarities is fascinating.
