Ffs can we just spell it "omlet"?
@Kungfupussy fork that I eat mine with a spune
@Tail hahah! See now we’re all in a world of trouble
@Kungfupussy we always have been. 🙃
@Tail I used to teach English in Japan in the early 2000s and explaining stuff like that was so frustrating. I’d usually say yeah English is stupid
@Kungfupussy I'd heard that English is one of the hardest languages to learn for non-native speakers, and I can kind of understand why. I tried learning Japanese way back when and just couldn't grasp it, the syntax seemed so backwards.
@Tail I’m terrible at learning languages and have so much respect for folks who are bilingual. I used to speak Japanese when I lived there but very basic level
@Kungfupussy watashi was hou ga anata yori oishii desu is all I know, that and I can maybe remember a few swears but that's it. Being multilingual is unfathomable to me. But I'm trying to learn Spanish now, it's not so bad.
@Tail oui
@VolleyB omlet du fromage
@VolleyB indeed. To be fair that proved to be an effective method of teaching lots of people a very small amount of French in the span of only 20 minutes
@Tail French people, all over the world:
"Je ressens une perturbation dans la Force..."
@kaehlys lol well hey I just learned some etymology about the word perturbed, so that's pretty cool.
@Tail I'm exposed to a several other languages at work and the English from whence the translations originated. Seeing all the commonalities and similarities is fascinating.
@kaehlys very much so. I was learning Norwegian for a good while and it was obvious like, half the words you could look at and make a fairly reasonable guess as to what it would translate into in English. Languages are crazy. As far as I know English is basically half Germanic anyway.
@Tail I believe about 7 in 10 English words have Germanic origins. I'm currently learning German and being able to make a solid guess as to what a word is really helps the process.
@kaehlys German always seemed hard to me but I never really gave it a proper effort. I keep wanting to learn a new language to move out of the US but Duolingo can only take you so far.
@Tail Some of the grammar can get a little funky, and the gender stuff *really* throws a spanner in the works.
I'm using Duolingo, watching Herr Antrim's videos on YouTube (he's an Illinois high school German teacher), and using Olly Richards's Story Learning.
I also watch the Deutsche Welle TV station to train my ear to lots of different voices and accents.
@Tail Nope. Gotta keep French pure.
@Tail But on the plus side, you could have a gimlet instead.
@sfleetucker that seems pretty French. What's a gimlet?
@Tail Gin, lime cordial and a garnish, either a cucumber or lime slice or both.
@sfleetucker oh that sounds really damn good!
@Tail a not as good as a Negroni, but darn tasty.
@sfleetucker my go-to is a Cadillac margarita on the rocks with a Grand Marnier floater. Mostly out of tradition. I do love lime though.
@Tail that is cut with a nife
