@mcfate @th3j35t3r So about the time Trump started his campaign? Hm.
@mcfate I feel like a lot of crazy started coming out of the woodworks around then.
Heh. GamerGate went on well before that, and there was well before Trump got started.
There's been online insanity since USENET days. It's just now, there are platforms that are effectively dedicated to promoting it with their "engagement" algorithms.
Hey, remember "Tay", the artificially intelligent teenaged girl from Microsoft, who got turned into a crack-smoking Nazi in a WEEK?
@mcfate I don't remember Tay but I remember there being lots of AI chat dealios that you could talk to and they'd learn from everyone's conversations with them and they would usually end up racist.
Very indicative.
@mcfate I want to laugh at that, and a younger me certainly would have contributed to it, but it's.. bothersome. It's easy enough for trolls to coordinate to ruin things like that, like when .. I think it was either Mountain Dew or Doritos had a naming poll and "Hitler Did Nothing Wrong" ended up being the winning post.
"People should need to pass licensing tests to use the Internet."
@mcfate They really should. Or at least aptitude tests to use social media, etc. Alas, people treat it as a right, not a privilege.
We had a guy who seemed to think he had some sort of a "right" to an account here just the other day.
😶
@mcfate Think I remember seeing that, people don't understand what Free Speech means. It certainly doesn't mean you get to be an asshole and not have any repercussions for it. Nobody is owed a soap box.
The First Amendment places no restrictions on anyone but the Congress, the end.
