I was up in the wee hours, drinking coffee and thinking about language. Language, in its simplest form, is a highly sophisticated construct. I often wonder how children learn such complicated stuff. I am fascinated by the art of linguistics: The Irish phrase 'I have to go strain the spuds', for example, semantically means that you need to strain the water from the potatoes, but pragmatically, it means I have to go for a wee. open.substack.com/pub/paulbess
