Alberta transplant patients risk being infected with Bartonella bacteria which caused Trench Foot fever in WWl soldiers. The source of such organs increasingly come from opiate deaths of the homeless, who like those soldiers, lack access to basic hygiene.

There are consequences to not adequately helping the homeless as the authors note

@NorthernInvader WTF are they doing harvesting organs from homeless addicts who overdose is all that I can say to this! DaFuq??🤢 🤬

@Tattoomonkey29 Well one way to look at it is if the OD doesn't affect the quality of the organ being harvested then at least in death that individual has done some good. Also homeless people that die without any known relatives, to take possession of the remains and determine its disposal, become the state's responsibility for disposal in a Potters Field (A ”potter's field” is a place where all the unclaimed, unknown & indigent are buried).

@NorthernInvader I still find it unethical to harvest organs I'm assuming without consent and history. (Also organs are big$$) FFS I had cancer & treatment and that alone disqualifies me from being a donor. Also, I'm a recovering addict and know many active addicts and no way would I want to risk being exposed to something that we may not even know exists yet. With all our advances in DNA and tech I hope the days of unknown people in Potters Fields are going to be ending soon!
