Monday night is orchid shower night. Take them out of their pots. Drench the bark not the leaves. Let them drain all night in the sink. Feed them once a month. PS/ They like to be together. All the time.
Ice cubes are for rookies.
@iamwill1w9 @LnzyHou Some types of orchids are easier than others. Phalaonopsis (sp.?) are pretty easy, but others are easier. Orchid bark, no soil. Let the roots have room, and dry between watering. That orchid society could help with an easier one to start.
@iamwill1w9 @LnzyHou At my worst (best?), I had about 14 orchid plants of various varieties, and sizes. I'd buy 'em out of bloom, and coax them to blooming for a surprise. Now I'm down to just two. It got to be a LOT of care, watering once a week. 2-3 hours to soak and drain them all. But I loved them so much.
@NTropy_Sellers @LnzyHou That’s really cool! I have a friend who buys them in bloom and then gives them to me when they’re done blooming. If I can get a few of them to bloom again I’ll consider that a huge success!
Understand. They are my ladies. I have seven & have to stop. No more room.
Retailers have started selling orchids in moss because it holds water longer on the shelf. Orchids hate moss because it never dries. You can smell it rotting.
Take it apart & remove all vestiges of moss. Trim off any dead. Repot in good orchid bark.
@LnzyHou @NTropy_Sellers Yes! That’s the first thing I do. Remove the moss, clean them up, and put them in bark.
@iamwill1w9 @LnzyHou Yeah, I have a few nice orchid pots. Two ceramic, and the rest are terra cotta. I prefer the terra cotta. Find pots with large drainage holes.
I buy orchid pots at Habitat, Goodwill, Salvation Army then change out the colors for the season.
@LnzyHou @NTropy_Sellers Oh that’s a fun idea!
@LnzyHou @NTropy_Sellers This one was my favorite. I got it to bloom once, and then it went downhill. I cried when it died. 🤦🏻
But it was seriously gorgeous and smelled amazing!
@iamwill1w9 @LnzyHou Wow, that is gorgeous! Sad that it died, though. :(
Stunning.
@NTropy_Sellers @LnzyHou Yeah, I killed several more difficult orchids before joining the orchid society. Now I have about 7 phals, and I’m hoping I can get them to survive. Fingers crossed!
I’m following the basic advice: bark, potted correctly, good temp and humidity, watering correctly, feeding correctly…at least it’s all correct in theory. 🤷🏼♂️
We’ll see.
