Over the years I have represented a number of men convicted of murder. I have always been perplexed by the prison groupies, the women who fall in love with a man who will never be free (or who might be executed). My take has been that loving someone from afar is “safe” - they can’t get hurt. My sense of them is that many (most?) are abuse survivors themselves, and by loving someone like that, they can do so safely and feel needed.
Regardless, it’s a bit sad and twisted.

@Myrth I volunteered at the Behavioral Health Department at our hospital back in the days when I thought I wanted to be a psychologist. A 'condition' thrown around in those days was the narcissist/codependent relationship. In the case of prison groupies, it seems to me it could be explained in this context as well. Whereas the controller is behind bars and the pleaser is running around fixing problems on the outside. The 'needs' of both people are met. Sick as that sounds!!
@Myrth it also gives a bit of notoriety, I think, like 'See? I'm a bad girl too!' without the risk.
@Myrth Someone married Ted Bundy from the witness stand, and managed to have a baby (girl) with him. Someone walks this earth with that monster’s chromosomes. Because a pathetic fool got tangled up with him.
How about the one who was going to marry Manson?!
