A magnitude 7.5 #earthquake struck just beneath Japan's Noto Peninsula about 7 hours ago.
The ground moved up to 10 feet. It was a result of "deformation" (bending) causing "reverse thrusting" between the Amur and Okhotsk Plates.
However, this is a shallow fault that basically handles some of the pent-up stress resulting from broader motions as the Pacific Plate is subducted beneath the Eurasian Plate.
Shallow quakes are more damaging, since more of released stress/energy reaches surface.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency initially issued a tsunami warming for prefectures on the west coast of Japan.
The U.S. Tsunami Warning Center warned of tsunami waves up to 3 feet high.
That threat has now passed.
