Morning thought:

When people say "God told me to do this" or "This is what God wants me to do" what they actually mean is "This is what I want to do, but I lack the guts to take personal responsibility for it."

This is both because God doesn't actually talk to people, at least not that way (with specific instructions); and because, in some circles, people reflexively drag "God" into their language to make them seem holier.

But this just makes their God the tool of their egotism.

@DavidSalo I have personally experienced numerous incidents where I have given an employee a choice in some matter, to which they reply that they'll "have to pray about it." The answer invariably comes back as "no," which has always made me lean toward, and agree with, your analysis. This tendency to draw God into the decisions is something to hide behind when giving an answer that someone else won't like.
