My grad school will be ending email accounts for alumni in January. I’m not bothered as such- I don’t really need it. I’m curious about their motivation though. They said “This change will align us with industry best practices and improve email security.” Huh?

What best practices? I get that it lightens the load regarding security, but what’s the “best practice” argument beyond that? Are people getting un-entitled discounts somewhere with .edu addresses?
