@MichaelTalon without trying to label them I would focus on the shame/guilt/pathological projective self punishment killing them selves by proxy. And agreed, their generation and particularly the religious/cultural environments they grew up in. Like I said before the underlying pathology is interesting. And that’s just one interpretation. Looks like you have a research question.
