Now that eggs are so expensive, how many days after the date on the carton would you still eat them?
I'm at 5 days past now.
@Mathias You can check freshness of individual eggs by doing the "float" test. If they sink in water and lay on their side, they're fresh. If they sink but stand upright, you need to eat them soon. If they float, they're not fit to eat.
@Mathias I have gone at least 7 days past the date on the eggs and they are fine. I crack each one into an empty bowl and smell it before adding to the bowl/pan just in case.
@Mathias in an effort to be helpful, you can do a test at home on whether an egg is still good or not. All you need is a bowl of water.
@Mathias I've never had eggs last more than a week, how do you manage?!
@Waldo06 Is that because you eat them fast or buy old eggs?
@Mathias I destroy eggs. If my cholesterol wasn't through the roof Id easily eat 18 a week myself. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) I have cut back and do maybe 4 myself a week. Wife and kiddo usually eat 4-6 for breakfasts as well. And then cooking uses 1-2 a week.
@Mathias Eggs are not any big deal. I have eggs in my frig that are a month past & yes I will use them.
The date on the package is merely a suggestion.
As people have already mentioned, the "float test" is the final authority.
@Mathias I still get a dozen eggs from Amazon Fresh for 3.39. 18 eggs are 4.59. At the groc store they are 7 a doz. Even Costco are more $ than AF but 2 doz is more than I will eat.
@Mathias Yes. I hardly ever pay attention to the date on eggs - maybe I should but...
I'm picky about 'expire by' dates on some things to the point where I 'got' a cartoon I saw somewhere of a guy eating something out-of-date and laying the expired label on his pillow when he went to bed. 😂
Clarification - I'm not worried about if they are safe or not.
I wondered how much other people stick to the date printed on the package.
