๐ง Allman Brothers Band, self titled. One of the best debut albums ever. From the twin guitar/drums blast of "Don't Want You No More" to the embryonic "Whipping Post', every song puts Duane's vision on full display. Gregg's vocal reveal in "Not My Cross To Bear" alone made him a legend. I was in an ABB tribute band for many years and we played most of these songs, not easy but a lot of fun (when you got them right).

We played Les Brers in the basement a few times but never in public... My admiration for Berry Oakley grew with each LP he was on.

He was a master level player with zero frame of reference, MAYBE James Jamison, but I can't think of anyone else that played like him. I was the keyboard/piano/lead singer in that tribute band and yeah my admiration for Gregg and for Chuck Leavell skyrocketed trying to play those songs.
@tgraph52 Right? One of my favorite ABB stories is when Gregg showed Duane "Whippin' Post" and Duane said "I didn't know you knew 11/4 time" and Gregg said "I don't know what that is..." Duane said "Ok dumbass, I'll draw you a picture." I had the immense fortune to hang out with Kim Payne, who was one of their stagehands, many years ago and he told some amazing and hilarious stories.

Man, my brother, a FANATICAL ABB fan, still has that issue of RS.
back when they were doing fun rock n roll journalism, on newsprint
I think the glossy cover with Jack Nicholson was the last time I read a RS
@tgraph52
You know it's weird but I never "trusted" that magazine. Probably because my older brothers read it. CREEM was my go to as I started understanding what rock and roll music and culture really meant. Of course, being a Hunter Thompson fan, I read RS whenever he had an article ("The Banshee Screams..." still makes me cry). I was more enamored with their writers (Fricke, O'Rourke, Bangs) than the overall content. I was too young to "get it" when it was still cool!
They did some very good interviews, sporadically. I remember a good 2 part Garcia one, being a G Dead fan. And to publish Fear and Loathing as a 2 part series was pretty cool. But they turned their focus away from that a long time ago and I stopped subscribing, before they went glossy in 85.
A friend in college [1971] had a subscription and 1/2 the dorm read his copies... well worn ๐

I remember reading this RS article when it came out... A fascinating look at the band.
The stuff that makes 19 yr olds want to get in a band.
