Post-trip dispatch: 5 days in NYC. Neighborhoods visited: Coney Island, Brighton Beach, Chinatown, Soho, Little Italy, Chelsea, East/West Village, Times Square, Central Park/72nd St, DUMBO, Williamsburg. Subway lines C,Q,F,L,N. Avg 6 miles a day walking. Crime encountered: zero. Bagels, 5. Pizza slices, 4. Street Dogs, 1. It never once felt that the city was in decline. It was vibrant and fun, if just a little bittersweet. I still love her and she still loves me.
@MPCavalier Such great pics with your beautiful family! Glad you shared your positive experience. It is a great place to live (if you live outside Manhattan and either own or have a rent stabilized apt).
@Bliss
Thank you. My fam is really incredible. Long story short we r getting ready to sell my “childhood home” in Coney Island. When that happens it will be the first time since about 1920 that my family is not living somewhere in NYC. Its very weird to know that place wont be ours anymore. Four generations. Maybe one of the next gen will re-plant our roots there someday.
I’m so jaded, there’s a little piece of me that wishes something bad had happened. A shitty flight, a mugging, a bad meal, someone having a breakdown, some experience that somehow tainted the whole trip so I could feel justified saying “thank god I never have to go back there”. But it was glorious. My wife and kids were amazing and hilarious the whole time, they have NYC in their DNA even though they were all born in Indy. It was like the city was fully cooperating. Maybe I miss her after all.
