Sometimes life skills dovetail nicely. My editing project involves pidgin tongues. Today I learned the best translation guides are in Spanish. ๐Ÿ‘Œ

I used to move in spheres where the way you got ahead was through the performance of knowledge. People in "chats" would simply be waiting for the other person to finish so they could show off what they knew, rattling off facts & associations.

But if we're *really lucky*, we get to use our knowledge to be a better bridge.

What a gift that always is.

๐Ÿ˜‚ The boat I'm using for this project is verging on "aircraft carrier"-sized, so I can't tell anymore!

In all seriousness, there's a cultural component here, and when I work with these projects I'm always humbled by how much we take for granted about how we *learned* to tell coherent stories.

It's not as intuitive as people sometimes assume--and folks from other places, especially those with fewer libraries/books, don't always have a magical "alt" style. They just... didn't have the exposures and practice that quickly becomes background noise, "a given", in many of our writing lives.
