Military, firefighters, ambulance workers, long haul truckers, humanitarian aid delivery workers... everyone counts today. Anyone whose work puts them on the road is under the Catholic notion of patronage covered by celebrations today, at the close of a weekend of similar. Don't forget your everyday and emergency workers! 👌🏻💪🏻
Incongruent to me too, Lise! But exactly what fuels my big-tent humanism; respect for religion here gives these celebrations of everyday workers public sanction even when the spectacle of workers' rights breaks with the spirit of "convivencia" by making for very noisy spectacle. There are *so* many different ways to approach social change & push for greater inclusion.
It's just a shame we so rarely look to see what the world is doing when fighting for a more just society close to home.
@MLClark I really appreciate these glimpses into the culture in which you've chosen to live. Utterly fascinating.
Thank you for your presence with them! It really helps to have an opportunity to clarify my thoughts on what I'm seeing and living through.
But not everyone's up for that. Members of my own family are deeply incurious; many others are stuck in some pretty entrenched prejudices (fuelled by Netflix) about this slice of the world. So - a joy to share.
Hope your Sunday is faring beautifully. 🤗
@MLClark These photos you're showing us are so powerful. The incongruity of those statues (to me!), and yet .... look at the sense of community they help bring about.
