Healing right now is an episode of Ologies while finishing the rest of my errands.

(Emojis are SO recent and such a fascinating site of meaning creation and re-creation around the world!)

Also, I feel vindicated! I always thought ๐Ÿ™ meant prayer, so I didn't use it even when people told me it also meant high-five. The high-fivers are a niche group globally!

Do you! But there shall be no praise or prayer hands from me.

(I also laughed at the emoji for cucumber showing up chopped on some apps, making for very unintentionally menacing sexting at times. Flirt online with an emoji dictionary on hand, is I think the lesson here! ๐Ÿ™ƒ)

@MLClark Great link. In the beginning, I boycotted emojis because I thought they were ridiculous, but now I see them as part of the language -- at least *this* language -- and an often necessary part. The fact that I habitually and unintentionally comically misuse them is another story entirely. ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿคท

@LiseL

Oh, I did NOT use emojis for years - until I started learning Spanish and realized they helped immensely for providing context-cues to offset tonal missteps in my rigid, awkward prose. (I also learned to take myself a touch less seriously over time, methinks. Do you have a favourite? ๐Ÿ‘€)

@MLClark This is a boring answer, but it's the multi-coloured hearts. ๐Ÿงก โค๏ธ ๐Ÿ’š I don't care much for what the colours are supposed to signify (but I stay away from blue just in case), but I know how powerful they are when received at just the right time. And you?

@LiseL I love how much variation the hearts invite! Good choice!

For me... I love that we have three faces of the globe: a subtle way of nudging us to think a touch bigger than ourselves. ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒ And when I want to go even bigger? ๐ŸŒŒ

But the one that always makes me laugh is this little monocled fellow, ๐Ÿง, who often represents thinking deeper or skeptically about something. For me it's a perfect way of saying "hold on a minute, what's this now?" without changing the tone to something *too* serious.

@MLClark Excellent humanist choices! โœ… ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿง is also an excellent choice, as is ๐Ÿค”, now that methinks of it. I just realized that I tragically underuse ๐Ÿคจ (it has a muppet-like quality to it, don't you think?) and intend to rectify that injustice in future. ๐Ÿ˜‚

@LiseL It IS muppet-like! ๐Ÿ˜…

But it's funny - that one definitely looks a little angrier on some platforms than others, which is I think why I haven't used it as much. Let's definitely bring it to life in more conversations, though. I definitely *feel* ๐Ÿคจ more often than I express!

@MLClark ๐Ÿ˜‚ Maybe *that's* why I don't use it! I think it might be too edgy for most conversations.

@MLClark

Always laugh when high five is mistaken for praying. ๐Ÿ† pretty sure eggplant used for sexting not cucumber.

@LnzyHou It is, but the example of a cucumber was used to describe variation of associated images across platforms during early emoji development, and the dangers that came out of said variability.

We now all safely use eggplants peaches etc because of early missteps!
