About the worst thing I ever said to a police officer was "OK, my registration is in the glove compartment, and I am going to reach for it slowly now, ok?"
To which the officer said, "Why are you acting so paranoid"
And I replied, "Because the last officer who also pulled me over because my car fit the description of a car used in a robbery pulled out his gun and stuck it in my face when I reached for the glove compartment, and I don't want to get shot in the face".
The moral of this story is...
They send cops to classes to teach them how to deescalate interactions, and then they send 'em to other classes telling them they need to dominate and establish authority, so the deescalate stuff doesn't stick.
That... and get them hopped up on adrenaline because they're afraid, you're in a world of hurt.
Learn to deescalate as a citizen. Do not become belligerent. Be helpful, soothing... like you're are dealing with a potentially viscous dog.
