Since the subject of being a 'Real American' came up today I did research :P 2018 Grinnell College study found as very important:

1) Treating people equally
2) Take personal responsibility for your actions
3) Acceptance of people from different racial backgrounds
4) Acceptance of people from different religious backgrounds
