I don't know that people are any less critical in their thinking today than some time in the past. I think technology (the internet) has brought us into contact with the worst outcomes of it, so it FEELS like things are "worse" than before.

I have observed just the contrary. Never have I seen such low-level, group think in my life.
IE: Trump’s continued popularity after 90+ indictments, conviction of sexual assault, fraud with campaign funds, master mind of insurrection, stolen classified documents, election interference etc etc etc and still polling neck & neck with Biden.
Never in my lifetime have I seen such profound ignorance and lack of patriotism

I've said for some time, this is at the heart of what is wrong in this country. People seize on a "cause", for any number of reasons, some likely subconscious, and no other inputs can shape their view.
It could be the middle east, the 2nd amndmt, climate, you name it.
"I saw my hero celebrating this, so it's all that matters!"
