Original Muslim theology posited that the world was divided between the House of Islam and the House of War, and it was the duty of Islam to bring the House of War under Muslim domination.

Then, as Islam became established, a third House was declared: The House of Peace, where the House of Islam could have peaceful, diplomatic relations with non-Muslim polities.

So much of modern Islamic fundamentalism is a reverting to the original dualism. It's not working out for anyone.
